One of Brazil’s best-known coastal destinations
Porto de Galinhas is located in the municipality of Ipojuca, approximately 55 km south of Recife, Pernambuco. Internationally recognized for its crystal-clear natural pools, marine biodiversity, and world-class hotel infrastructure, the destination provides an exceptional setting for delegates and accompanying guests of the 12th International Sheep Veterinary Congress.
History and Origin of the Name / History
Originally inhabited by the Caetés Indigenous people, the region was known as Porto de Suape. In the nineteenth century, after the formal abolition of the slave trade in Brazil, the site became a clandestine landing point. To evade inspection, ships announced the arrival of shipments of “guinea fowl.” The smugglers’ code phrase was “There’s a new chicken at the port!” The popular expression eventually gave the town its name. Today, the community has reinterpreted this history and adopted the chicken as a cultural and artistic symbol.
